Looking to the reconstruction of Afghanistan and Iraq, the events of the past year remind us that it takes years of hard work to nurture the institutions that sustain democracies and free markets. However, amid all these challenges, we are seeing that the business community remains committed to a path of growth, job creation, and peace and stability in most parts of the world. At the Center for International Private Enterprise, our goal is simple and straightforward: nurture the growth of free enterprise and democracy so that the developing world can escape poverty and oppression. Free and fair elections are just the start of establishing a lasting liberal democracy. Respecting economic freedoms, protecting property rights, sustaining a stable rule of law, maintaining accountability and transparency in government, and establishing an independent judiciary are a few other necessary components. 1998 Annual Report

In Review CIPE announced new projects last year to promote democratic development throughout the world. These new programs span the globe - reaching such wide-ranging areas as China, Vietnam, Mexico, Kenya, and Belarus. In all, CIPE awarded 72 projects in FY19983 totaling $5,676,560. CIPE also continues to monitor a number of projects funded in previous years. Read more…
