To meet challenges associated with Indonesia’s quickly growing financial technology (fintech) industry, lawmakers are adopting a regulatory “sandbox” mechanism intended to accommodate an amount of innovation and experimentation with government oversight. A key aim of such measures is to help create evidence-based laws and regulations that can adapt to the sector’s growth. While the benefits may seem clear to many, history tells us that the regulatory sandbox approach can also introduce new elements of risk or serious problems in an operating environment. To help create deeper understanding of these issues, CIPE commissioned an in-depth study by the Center for Indonesian Policy Studies (CIPS).
